How to Enjoy Onsen, Japanese-Style

Japanese-style bathing is a bit different from the western style, though you can enjoy onsen like an expert once you understand the basic principles.

Here are some tips on how to take a Japanese-style bath:

You are only to enter the bathtub after having washed your body. First, you are to rinse your body with hot water; washing beforehand helps to keep the water in the bathtub clean. The rinsing and washing of your body with hot water also acclimatizes you to the actual temperature of the bathtub. Please use discretion when entering the bathtub, and do not jump into the water as one might in a swimming pool.

Bring the small towel that will be provided for you, but please do not put it into the bath water. Most people place the towel on their head. Also, please avoid using any soap, shampoo or other skin cleansers while in the bathtub.
